As adults, we generally know when it is time to come in out of the cold. Children, however, often seem to react to extreme temperatures with an “I’m invulnerable” attitude. If they get cold, so what? They are having fun. What are five more minutes going to matter? Just let me finish this snowman or win this snowball fight and then I will go inside. To be brutally honest, children are actually more susceptible to frostbite that adults are. This is due to the fact that children tend to lose body heat at a faster rate. The most often cases of frostbite in children is that of the toes, fingers and ears. Frostbite can be easily prevented by parents that are watchful on the time that has been spent outdoors and by insuring that the children dress warmly. The jacket or coat is a given, but another really good concept for the careful parent to invest in is the thermal underwear. Warm clothes are a must to prevent colds, flu, and frostbite, all over the body, but one must keep in mind that the extended regions of a child’s body are most susceptible. Earmuffs or toboggans are a must for the ears. For the hands, of course, there are gloves. It is good to make sure that the gloves are insulated and that moisture cannot seep through. Wet gloves in the winter are as effective as no gloves at all. Lastly, we have the feet. Toes are likely the most apt to suffer from frostbite. With this in mind, we can assume that we need the same protection as the rest of the body, plus a little extra. First, the child needs two pairs of socks on to hold in the warmth of body heat. Then, a pair of good winter boots. Not just any though. Make sure that they are also waterproof and lined with some form of insulation. Protect your child from frostbite. Be watchful and invest in the
cost of a good pair of gloves, earmuffs, and winter boots. Aren’t
